Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The concerning event took place on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"
"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body
"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send officials were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"
"Our inquiry continues what happened subsequent to that time"
